BioNTech Opens Advanced mRNA Manufacturing Facility at La Trobe University

BioNTech has officially opened a state-of-the-art mRNA manufacturing and research facility at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia, marking a significant milestone for medical innovation, biotechnology and local manufacturing. The project brings together academia, industry and government, with the wider life sciences ecosystem expected to support up to 1,200 jobs over the next decade.

The opening ceremony took place on 20 October at the university’s Bundoora campus, attended by Victorian Treasurer Colin Brooks and Minister for Economic Development Anthony Carbines. The facility strengthens Victoria’s position in life sciences while expanding Australia’s capacity to develop and manufacture advanced medical technologies. The new site will support researchers in developing investigational mRNA-based treatments and manufacturing candidates for clinical trials across the Asia-Pacific region. Initial research priorities include potential treatments for cancer, cardiovascular and neurological diseases, autoinflammatory conditions, as well as new vaccines.
La Trobe University Chancellor John Brumby said the facility reflects the ambition behind the university’s AUD 5 billion University City development, which aims to connect world-leading research with global industry. BioNTech has already begun mRNA research and development at the university’s Eagleworks Innovation Centre. The new manufacturing facility extends that partnership, creating opportunities to translate scientific discoveries into potential treatments, new industries and economic growth.

Combining mRNA Technology and Artificial Intelligence

La Trobe Vice-Chancellor Professor Theo Farrell highlighted the importance of bringing together biotechnology, mRNA research and artificial intelligence to accelerate medical innovation.
Through the Australian Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Medical Innovation (ACAMI), university researchers will collaborate with BioNTech to advance scientific discovery and help translate research into new treatments. Launched in 2024 with support from the Victorian Government, the centre is part of a broader strategy to connect researchers, students and industry partners.
The university’s research capabilities are further strengthened by its NVIDIA DGX H200 supercomputer, commissioned in June 2025 as the first of its kind at an Australian university. The system supports advanced data analysis, research into personalised therapies and faster progress towards clinical trials.

Strengthening Investment and Advancing Medical Innovation

Victorian Government representatives emphasised the role of medical research in attracting investment, supporting highly skilled employment and strengthening the state’s global competitiveness. Minister Anthony Carbines said the government was backing scientific breakthroughs and local jobs to position Victoria as a leading destination for medical research. Treasurer Colin Brooks added that BioNTech’s facility could help deliver the next generation of life-changing treatments while driving economic growth.
BioNTech Chief Operating Officer Sierk Poetting highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in building long-term research and manufacturing capabilities. He said the collaboration would strengthen the local mRNA ecosystem and support research aimed at improving outcomes for patients worldwide. Located within La Trobe’s University City precinct, the facility is a cornerstone of BioNTech’s partnership with the Victorian Government. Plans for the clinical-scale mRNA manufacturing site were first announced in December 2023, alongside plans for ACAMI, which officially launched the following year.
By combining advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence and biomedical research, the initiative aims to accelerate the development and clinical testing of potential new therapies while expanding regional expertise in biotechnology. The opening reinforces La Trobe University’s role as a bridge between research and industry. For BioNTech, the facility provides an important platform for developing and manufacturing investigational mRNA-based treatments for the Asia-Pacific region, with the long-term goal of translating scientific advances into meaningful benefits for patients and the wider economy.
